What Are Available Treatments For Menstrual Disorders?

Menstrual disorders can be classified as problems women face that affect their normal menstrual cycle. They include painful stomach cramps, abnormal bleeding or no bleeding at all. Menstruation occurs within a female between puberty and menopause. It is the monthly flow of blood from the uterus through the cervix and the vagina. It is often referred to as menses or periods.

Overview of the female reproductive system

  • The uterus- It is a pear-shaped organ located between the bladder and lower intestine. It is responsible for serving as a womb for the fetus to gestate during pregnancy.

  • The cervix- It connects the uterine cavity to the vagina and allows the flow of menstrual blood from the uterus into the vagina.

  • The Fallopian tubes- They connect the uterus to the ovaries. Ovaries are organs that produce eggs that are responsible for creating the fetus after being fertilised by sperm.

  • The endometrium- It is the inner lining of the uterus which thickens and becomes enriched with blood during pregnancy. When pregnancy does not occur, this layer sheds and starts the menstruation process.

Menstrual disorders

  • Dysmenorrhea or the painful cramps experienced during menstruation.

  • Menorrhagia is heavy bleeding and prolonged menstruation.

  • Metrorrhagia is irregular bleeding between expected periods.

  • Menorrhea is when menstruation is absent.

Treatment for menstrual disorders

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSA IDs) like Advil or Motrin can help in pain relief for cramps.

  • Oral contraceptives can help with regulating periods and control heavy bleeding. There are newly introduced continuous-dosing oral contraceptives that reduce or eliminate menstrual periods.

  • Treatment for underlying disorders that cause menstrual irregularities, such as counselling or fixing an eating disorder.

  • For critical disorders, an endometrial ablation is a surgical option.

  • In further serious cases where medical therapy shows no results, hysterectomy may be considered as a last resort.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by complex fluctuations in various hormones. These hormones work to prepare a woman’s body for pregnancy. Menstruation is a very important process of the female body and contributed to the overall health of the person. Keeping an eye on issues related to menstruation is important as late treatment or no treatment can lead to critical medical emergencies that can even be fatal.
